For cleaning silver / silver coins. Not suitable for copper and bronze. Zinc can go in for a very short time.
Use standard 1 part grains on 5 parts water. In case of light soiling, adjust the ratio downwards. In case of a thick crust, adjust the ratio upwards. Ascorbic acid is difficult to dissolve in water. Therefore use hot water to dissolve it.
Place the coins in the ascorbic acid bath for a few hours to a day, depending on the amount of dirt and the thickness of the oxidation crust. Then rinse and if necessary brush off with a soft brush. Then neutralise for 1 or 2 days in demineralised water and allow to dry.
Do not worry that the coins and dirt will turn red. This is part of the process. Also wear gloves, because the substance can also turn your hands red. The advantage of ascorbic acid is that it is less intense than citric acid and the patina is better preserved.
By contact with the sulphur in the air, the silver coin will oxidize again and the coin will turn black again after a while. To prevent this, you can store the coin in a coin holder or place it in a coin capsule in your display case. Treating with Paraloid B72 or Renaissance Wax is of course also possible.
